Types of Network Cables

Network cables, also known as Ethernet patch cables, come in various types and are used to connect devices to a network. Some common types of network cables include:

  • Category 5 (Cat5) cable: This is a twisted pair copper cable used for transmitting data at speeds up to 100Mbps.
  • Category 6 (Cat6) cable: This is a twisted pair copper cable used for transmitting data at speeds up to 10Gbps.
  • Fiber optic cable: This uses glass fibers to transmit data at high speeds over long distances.
  • Coaxial cable: This is a copper cable used for transmitting data at speeds up to 10Mbps.

The choice of network cable depends on the speed and distance requirements of the network. For example, Cat6 cables are suitable for high-speed LANs, while fiber optic cables are ideal for long-distance data transmission.
